Summary module description:
The module deals with the principles of how children learn in science through developing an understanding of the responsibilities of the teacher to provide children with practical experiences to enable progression in both concept development and in scientific process skills from Early Years Foundation Stage to the top of KS2. The module will develop trainees’ planning, teaching and assessment skills and will consider the range of materials, resources, contexts and management appropriate to enable progression through the Early and Primary Years. The implications for teaching and learning in science of questioning and constructive feedback, children’s progression in recording / communicating in science and helping children to reflect on their work will be addressed.

• To enable trainees to apply, when teaching the pedagogical knowledge that will secure pupils’ progress in science. • To promote understanding of the nature of science as both knowledge and an investigative process of exploration and communication and the enormous potential this offers for all children’s learning through practical enquiry. • To provide experiences for trainees to gain confidence by acquiring subject knowledge and skills that are essential for effective planning, teaching and assessing to raise attainment. • To integrate appropriate ICT to enhance learning for all children in primary science. • To support trainees to use research evidence to reflect on and inform their practice. • To promote understanding of teaching and learning about science and citizenship.

Assessable learning outcomes:
• That trainees should have a secure model of progression for both the knowledge and understanding and the skills and processes of science. • That trainees should demonstrate a research based approach to inform teaching in terms of promoting learning through questioning and constructive feedback to all children both during practical science activities and in terms of all children’s recording.

Additional outcomes:
The module is designed to address the needs of trainees with respect to essential knowledge and skills for teaching, learning and assessing science as a core subject with effective integration of ICT in order to meet the Teachers' Standards. The assessed outcomes will provide evidence of attainment towards the Teachers’ Standards within the context of primary science.

Outline content:
Opportunities and rewards of teaching primary science, exploiting and fostering young children’s natural curiosity and considering how children learn in science. Developing skills in planning teaching and assessing practical science enquiries appropriate to children’s stage of learning and skills in order to maintain motivation and promote inclusion. Developing trainees’ questioning skills to offer constructive feedback to children in order to raise awareness of the children’s own thinking. Developing trainees’ ability to identify and use appropriate ICT and cross curricular links in planning for differentiated learning. Developing trainees’ ability to promote all children’s understanding of the importance of science linked to citizenship.

Global context:
All schools engage with the global citizenship agenda.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
University based training: lectures, practical work, formative exercises, and workshop activities. Complementary school based tasks, independent activities and directed tasks will contribute to the achievement of the intended learning outcomes.

The placement school experience involves 35 days in the Autumn term, 40 days in the Spring term and 45 days in the Summer term.

Formative assessment methods:
The development of a Science file is an integral part of the module and should develop into a coherent record of study and progression with evidence of reflective practice. This will be peer assessed. Occasional contributions to seminar presentations; preparation and analysis of teaching materials; completion of school-based tasks; follow up of supplementary and school-based work is expected. The completion of audits and follow up of subject knowledge are an essential part of professional development towards attaining QTS.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
