Summary module description:
This module offers students the opportunity to undertake an in-depth investigation into an aspect of theatre, leading to a 45 minute group production project. Projects will be performance-based but the context is open. The performance might be an adaptation of a dramatic script or a devised piece. It could be presented in the drama studio or, for example, be site specific, a piece of street theatre or presented to an audience of pupils in a school environment.

This module constitutes students’ final piece of independent work, the culmination of their academic practice and practical skills development, and enables them to focus on an area of individual interest. Students within the group have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to utilise their skills to research, rehearse, and present a theatrical presentation suitable for a specific deaf/hearing integrated audience. They will be expected to take responsibility for all artistic decisions, including those of design, lighting and stage management.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

•Define a performance project appropriately, to exemplify programme-related activities
•Research the subject matter, with evidence of independent and intelligent reading, and the ability to apply theory to practice
•Understand the conceptual issues involved, with a high degree of critical analysis and objective evaluation of the work as it goes along, presenting these effectively in a viva
•Apply diverse skills taught on the programme creatively and coherently
•Show originality of thinking and competence in drawing upon a range of associated ideas and techniques;
•Exhibit a high level of sensitivity in working with a deaf/hearing integrated group, good communication skills, and an ability to accommodate the ideas of others.??

The final presentation should demonstrate:
•A clear structure that demonstrates a high degree of understanding and application of the material
•Theatrical systems that are coherent and integrated, communicated to the intended audience with effectiveness and fluency
•An intelligent and articulate use of performance space, light, sound, costumes etc. as appropriate to the presentation’s needs
•Physical/visual theatre forms employed in preference to verbal ones where appropriate, and these used creatively and with expertise
•Where sign theatre and voice gloss techniques are operational, that these are employed with imagination and skill
•Evidence of a high level of awareness of the needs of a deaf/hearing integrated audience;
•The individual student’s sensitivity to the demands of the performance, and successful integration of individual contributions within the group/ensemble.

Additional outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students should also be able to:
•consolidate the skills of flexibility and co-operation emphasised elsewhere and provide experience in project planning and the effective use of time.

Outline content:
Students will submit a proposal for a performance project during the course of the Summer Term in Part 2. These proposals will be pitched to peers, whose feedback will be taken into consideration when projects receive approval. Projects will be approved according to their relationship to aspects of the Programme as a whole. All projects must be designed to be accessible to deaf-hearing integrated audiences and emphasis will be placed upon visual/physical performance and the use of sign language within the performance context. There will be a minimum of three students in any one project, though exceptions may be made in the case of a small cohort. Under supervision students will research, plan and rehearse the selected performance projects.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Project supervision will commence in the Summer Term of Part 2. Supervisors will provide regular guidance and constructive feedback as the work progresses, meeting with each group as the situation demands. Students will organise their own rehearsal time outside of timetabled contact time. The final performances will be presented in the Spring Term of Part 3 to an invited audience including External Examiners for moderation; alternatively performances may be recorded on DVD.

Other information on summative assessment:
The critical essay will be a research paper submitted during the Spring term prior to the Production.
A viva voce will be held during performance week (possibly attended by external examiners) providing Student groups with the opportunity to discuss their productions. Assessment of this will be incorporated in the mark for the Reflective Journal.

Formative assessment methods:
•There is opportunity to submit the critical essay formatively for feedback
•Verbal formative feedback on practical ideas and research is provided consistently throughout the module.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    An overall mark of 40%.

    Reassessment arrangements:
    Written Assignments and alternatives to the performance can be resubmitted during the summer resit period.

    2) Specialist equipment or materials: A modest budget is provided for the production work. Students should not exceed these with the use of their own funds.
    3) Specialist clothing, footwear or headgear: Loose, comfortable clothing required for practical work. Students can purchase jazz shoes for practical work if desired but this is optional.
    4) Printing and binding: Programmes for the productions are photo-copied by staff and should not incur cost to students.
