Summary module description:
This module constitutes students’ final piece of independent work, the culmination of their academic practice, and enables them to focus on an area of individual interest.
They may either follow an educational research model (report-style) or an alternative structure (essay-style), where they can compare three conceptual frameworks.

Aims:
Students have the opportunity to develop individual research skills into a topic related to, but not directly taught on, any aspect of the Programme, and to strengthen their writing skills.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
•Define a feasible project in a meaningful area of research, which will allow for significant independent work
•Conduct a systematic literature search and develop an appropriate bibliography of the critical literature
•Communicate the progress of the project engagingly in an interim viva
•Consider the appropriateness of activities such as visits, discussions, interviews and/or practical interventions
•Write an effectively organised paper with a cogent argument, demonstrating critical analysis of evidence to support judgements and using proper referencing conventions

Additional outcomes:
•Development of valuable skills and expertise for students' future careers
•An appropriate understanding of any ethical responsibilities associated with the study.

Outline content:
Student will submit a dissertation proposal form during the Summer Term of Year 2, and once this is approved, a dissertation tutor will be allocated. In the Autumn Term of Year 3, students will be asked to submit outline plans for their research and in the Spring Term they present and answer questions at an interim viva, to a small panel of supervising tutors; the vivas may be recorded on DVD for moderation purposes. The viva is intended to focus ideas about the research project before students embark upon the major writing period of their dissertation.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
After introductory lectures, supervision tutors will give guidance on initial ways of undertaking the research and refining the focus of the study, research design, methodologies and ethical considerations. Dissertation workshops are offered, to provide further support.
Students’ research skills will be developed through independent reading, with support from individual tutorials. Their study may be essay-style (secondary research only) or report-style (primary and secondary research), involving visits, interviews, and/or practical activities as appropriate.
Students are expected to submit drafts of some sections for comment by the supervisor.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    4) Printing and binding: Students are required to submit two hard copies of their dissertation, as well as an electronic copy.
    A dissertation of 10,000 words, with a Bibliography and Appendices, printed at 12 font, double-line spacing and single-sided will amount to about 60 pages.
    Based on 5p per sheet for printing and £1.00 for comb-binding at the Learning Hub, the cost to students would be a total of £8.00 approximately
