Summary module description:
This module will enhance students’ understanding of the nature and purpose of mathematics teaching and learning in the primary school, and their role as a mathematics specialist. Students will gain an international, national and local perspective as they explore different models of mathematics teaching and critically compare curricula, beginning to develop their understanding of progression. Students will grow in confidence as they set mathematics within a wider context, exploring global citizenship, links with other curricular areas and how visits can be used to enrich mathematics learning.

Aims:
•To familiarise students with national and international models of best practice in mathematics teaching
•To explore historical and contemporary factors around curriculum development and design
•To gain confidence in integrating mathematics teaching within a broad, balanced curriculum
•To consider how visits to museums, art galleries, science centres and parks can enhance mathematics teaching and learning and inspire reluctant learners

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
•Question mathematical pedagogy in the light of national and international comparisons
•Design elements of a school-based mathematics curriculum
•Describe key elements of the role of the mathematics subject leader
•Plan how they would utilize visits to enrich and enhance mathematical provision

Additional outcomes:
Students will deepen their understanding of the role of mathematics within a rich primary curriculum, through exploring concepts such as global citizenship as well as links with other curricular areas.

Outline content:
The module will follow two strands:

Global perspectives on mathematics teaching
• National and international comparisons such as Pacific Rim, Scandinavian models, Eastern European, Australia and the U.S.

Mathematics across the curriculum
• Global citizenship
• Links with other curricular areas e.g. art and science
• Planning visits – museums, art galleries, Islamic art, and Victoria and Albert Museum

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will be delivered in interactive sessions, which include lecturing, discussion and practical activities and blended learning, provided through Blackboard. Sessions will require some pre-reading, and students should be prepared to contribute their views and work collaboratively in order to make presentations. This module will also include external visits to develop students’ awareness of how these can be used to enrich mathematics teaching and learning.

Plan and provide a rationale for an educational visit on an identified theme to enrich the teaching of mathematics

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
