Summary module description:
This module focuses on the development of the student’s knowledge and expertise in music and musicianship. Teaching and learning strategies draw on practical music making, composing and musical analysis. Students work both individually and as part of larger musical formations.

Aims:
•To enable students to develop a comprehensive overview of musics over different periods and cultures;
•To introduce them to key concepts in musicological thought and practice relating to music analysis;
•To develop their creative work through composition and arranging;
•To develop their practical skills in music and musicianship;
•To enhance their level of competence in solo performance.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
•Demonstrate enhanced skills as creative musical practitioners;
•Harmonise simple melodies using the keyboard;
•Demonstrate an appropriate understanding of musical styles and structures;
•Demonstrate a mastery of specific compositional techniques in composition.

Additional outcomes:
Additionally, on successful completion of the module, students will:
•Develop the communication skills needed in music to lead subject-specific, skill-based sessions on a range of instruments with confidence;
•Work independently to develop high levels of mastery as a performer and composer;
•Be able to structure their learning and work independently.

Outline content:
Students will undertake intensive study on their principal study instrument or voice. In addition they will develop the ability to accompany other musicians on the piano. Through detailed study of varied musical styles students will develop their understanding of music in a range of contexts, together with the musicological methods that inform that understanding. They will explore these styles practically through arranging and composing, as well through performance.

Global context:
Musical styles from around the world will inform the development of cultural awareness.

Portfolio: Composition (30%), Written analysis (35%), solo performance (35%)

Formative assessment methods:
Students work collaboratively with their tutors to develop a range of instrumental/vocal techniques, a process based on regular feedback and evaluation. In addition, group workshops provide opportunities for peer discussion and reflection on progress.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
