Summary module description:
The module will explore the linkage between societal lifestyles and the resulting impact on the environment, resource use and biodiversity. It will reflect on a holistic approach on how behavioural change can be initiated through raising awareness of global concerns.

•To understand how our lifestyles impact on the environment and the sustainable use of resources
•Too consider how the environmental impact of resource usage affects the biodiversity of species
•To recognise how our increasing demand for energy is leading to global warming
•To consider why it is necessary to leave the majority of fossil fuels in the ground and how such needs can be met by renewable energy sources
•To reflect on what individual lifestyle changes might be needed to develop a more sustainable lifestyle

Outline content:
•Understanding current attitudes and values of students to current lifestyles
•What drives our ever increasing use of resources
•What is the impact of our increasing use of resources
•Why does a changing climate impact on almost all sustainable development goals
•Is it possible to use resources in a more sustainable manner to limit environmental impact
•Can we undertake the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy source within a time frame that will limit climate change
•What can individuals do to encourage other individuals and groups to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle

Global context:
The ever growing population with aspirations for rising living standards is creating ever increasing demands on resources. With the exception of solar energy, all resources are finite or their use may be limited due to their environmental impact. These constraints are impacting not only on biodiversity but also on society as a whole. The module will consider what the effects of these impacts on society are and how they can be reduced through individual action to partake in the emerging global consensus to limit climate change to preserve our biodiversity, grow sufficient food to feed a growing population and enable communities to remain in marginal lands.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
•To understand attitudes and values through formative assessment
•To identify preconceived ideas and knowledge
•To raise awareness of the environmental impact of our rising living standards
•To realise why our climate will continue to change and how the effects will increase in future years
•To recognise how changes in the climate will effect biodiversity and how these in turn will impact on our ability to feed a growing population
•To understand how changes in climate will affect the UN’s sustainable development goals
•To consider how individual action can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle
•Work based learning environment
•Generating an understanding of science based concepts for non-science students
•Developing consensus based on reliable facts and information
•Continuous assessment involving students in introducing topics and participating in group discussions

Penalties for late submission:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.
  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
