Summary module description:
This module introduces students to software quality and testing principles and methods. It encourages a systems view, putting quality systems and testing in context. Particular attention is given to the static and dynamic testing and the static testing in the context of test economy and application to contemporary software development

Aims:
This will provide a foundation for aspiring software developers, software architects and managers as well as being suitable for those who will move into professional testing and quality management. The module includes material compatible with the BCS, ISEB foundation certificate in testing and quality management.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student can:
1. Explain why testing is necessary.
2. Plan testing for the lifecycle of an artefact development.
3. Define test cases for black and white box problems.
4. Manage and execute static tests; with particular attention to requirements and design documents.
5. Present a systems view of preparing and executing, managing and reporting tests.
6. Explain the challenge of testing in agile environments.
7. Relate the test activity to the Capability Maturity Model (CMM).
8. Experience of live testing in an IDE.

Additional outcomes:
Acquaintance with the testing terminology used in the ISEB definitions;
Insight on testing in industrial practice.

1. Introduction to testing and Quality systems in IT.
2. The fundamental test process.
3. Testing throughout the lifecycle. Acceptance and regression testing.
4. Testing techniques.
5. Test management.
6. Designing practical testing systems.
7. Testing in Agile projects.
8. Introduction to the Capability Maturity Model.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The material will be provided in the lectures; presented and reinforced as pairs of lecture and syndicated tutorial sessions

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
