Summary module description:
This module provides the knowledge and understanding necessary for students to assess building passive and active systems in terms of their environmental performance and impact. The module will introduce the role of building site impact, building façade design, building services engineering systems, construction materials, facilities management and system controls in moderating the internal building environment and an understanding of the energy implications for each. Building users’ needs will also be addressed. The module will provide knowledge of heat transfer, building simulations and hands-on skills of simulation using software packages such as the integrated energy design tool LT, lighting design tool DIAL, integrated environmental solutions (IES) and energy assessment procedures. The module will also provide experimental practice. In addition, the module will provide the required knowledge about a wide range of issues related to health and well-being in buildings which should be considered for sustainable design and management of building services.

The aim is to provide holistic approach to deliver sustainable buildings.The integrated process of design, operation and management will be the core of this module. Students will also be trained in hands-on computer simulation skills and experimental skills.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
