Summary module description:


The module aims to discuss the fundamentals of nonlinear systems and optimisation methods, with a particular focus on their relevance in biological systems. 

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the students will be able analyse the behaviour of some nonlinear systems, to assess their stability, and to implement optimisation methods.

Outline content:

Introduction to nonlinear systems. Jacobian linearisation of nonlinear systems. Hodgkin-Huxley model of the membrane potential of single neurons. Neural population modelling. Unconstrained and constrained optimisation. Application of optimisation algorithms to nonlinear biological systems.

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, and guided independent study.
