Summary module description:
This module enables students to develop key research skills and in-depth knowledge and understanding of a specific topic through writing an extended essay on a subject of their choice, with supervision and guidance from researchers in the field.

Aims:
•to deepen knowledge and understanding of a chosen topic in Archaeology
•to enable discussion of research issues with practising researchers, and to develop critical awareness of current research
•to develop key research skills in preparation for doctoral research or professional employment

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able:
•to discuss the nature and significance of substantive and conceptual issues at the forefront of research in the particular topic
•to evaluate the nature and quality of archaeological data and the competing methodological and theoretical approaches to key issues in the subject area of the essay and to develop critiques of them
•to locate, extract, and assemble data and information from varied sources, with initiative and minimal guidance
•to take a creative approach to key issues and to develop independent interpretations of material through self-directed research
•to synthesise wide-ranging material and to articulate arguments effectively and clearly in writing an assessed essay and orally in tutorials

Additional outcomes:
This module also aims to develop independent problem-solving skills in evaluating complex and incomplete interdisciplinary data, which may be archaeological, textual and/or scientific. Tutorial discussions, critical reviews and the development of an individual essay topic encourage independent learning, as well as communication skills and personal responsibility.

Outline content:
Students must write a 9,000 word essay on a topic in Archaeology, which may include one or more themes from the following:
evolution of the human mind and language
origins of agriculture
social identity, gender, life cycle
ritual, religion and belief
burial archaeology
palaeopathology
dietary analysis
migration
material culture
buildings, settlement, urbanism
social complexity
environment and landscape
geoarchaeology
archaeological prospection
archaeological chronology
forensic anthropology
forensic geoscience.

Topics can be selected from a wide range of regions including for example: Britain and Ireland, Europe, the Mediterranean, Near East and the Americas, and early and later prehistoric and historical periods, including:
Palaeolithic
Mesolithic
Neolithic
Bronze Age
Iron Age
Classical
Roman
Medieval
Post-Medieval.

Selection and supervision of a topic is dependent on staff availability and discussion with the Module Convenor and MRes Programme Director.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Teaching and learning is primarily by means of regular tutorials and supervision, supplemented by classes according to student interest and staff availability.
