Summary module description:
The prerequisites for this course are a facility with elementary mathematics and statistics such as derivatives, probability distributions and random variables. Although advanced mathematics and statistics are not required, those students with an insufficient background should engage in intensive self-study prior to the start of the course. Students should also be familiar with introductory concepts in economics.
Aims:
This module provides an introduction to different data analysis techniques. At the end of this module students should be able to
•translate data into models to make forecasts and to support decision making
•understand the key topics in econometrics
•have the necessary data-handling and programming skills to carry out econometric estimation of models
•evaluate model outputs and take remedial actions if necessary
Assessable learning outcomes:
At the end of the modules, students should be able to:
•Understand how economics and statistics are used in combination to analyse data in modern econometrics.
•Combine data handling skills and econometric software skills to undertake applied econometric analysis and evaluate and interpret results

Other information on summative assessment:
The course will be assessed with a practical, computer based assignment and a class test (10% of final mark) in week 3 and another class test (30% of final mark) in the second week of the Spring Term. The coursework assignment will count for 60% of the final mark. The coursework assignment will be distributed in the eighth week of the Autumn term and will be due back at the end of the Spring term.

Requirements for a pass:
A mark of 50% overall.
