Responsibilities

I convene and teach the second year module: ‘Introduction to Francophone Literature of the Maghreb’.

My other teaching includes the ‘The Making of Modern France’ and translation for the part 2 language module.

Areas of Interest

I specialise in contemporary women’s writing in French.  My current research examines the representation of female bodily experiences in women’s novels from Algeria, France, and Mauritius; these include menstruation, childbirth, and the menopause.  I am analysing the works of authors such as Maïssa Bey, Leïla Marouane, Virginie Despentes, and Ananda Devi.  My research also explores anthropology, second wave feminism, and postcolonial theory.

My other areas of interest include surrealist literature and art.  I am particularly fascinated by the surrealists’ representations of gender.

Research groups / Centres

I am the co-founder of the Gender and Sexuality Research Network which is based at Reading University. I am also general editor for Gendered Voices magazine.

Qualifications:
