“Somebody told me that this very first sculpture by Gibbings had been given to the owner of the Hind’s Head pub at Bray. It had last been seen about 20 years previously in the kitchen garden.

“So one sunny afternoon a friend and I went and had a few pints and decided to search for it. We couldn’t find it anywhere and were disappointedly going back to the car when across a field in a ditch I saw a glint in the hedgerow.

“When we got closer, there, abandoned and lost in the ditch was this famous sculpture.”
