University of Reading SIAM Student Chapter

News and updates

This year, our department will be hosting fellow PhD student in Maths or Statistics from other UK universities once a month, to talk about their research. These talks will take place alongside our usual Thursday seminars at 1pm. This is a great opportunity to hear about work going on outside of Reading, so definitely not to be missed! Check the website here for the schedule.

This activity has been kindly sponsored by the QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics ( and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Thank you to our own vice-president, Giulia, for organising this!

SIAM-IMA Student Chapter Conference May 2018

On Friday 11th May, the University of Reading SIAM-IMA student chapter hosted a conference! We heard from some brilliant keynote speakers, including Dr. Mariano Beguerisse Diaz (University of Oxford & Spotify) on temporal continous networks, Dr. Elsa Arcaute (University College London) on urban hierarchical multifractality and Dr. Philippe Blondel (University of Bath) on mathematical problems with data collected in field work. We also saw some really interesting talks and posters from PhD students from around the UK. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

Congratulations to Joseph Field (University of Oxford) for winning the prize for the best presentation (kindly funded by IMA) and to runner-up Matthew Garrod (Imperial College) and also to poster prize winner Walton Pereira Coutinho (University of Southampton) and runner-up Carlo Cafaro (University of Reading)!

We finished the day with dinner, cocktails and more networking at Giraffe. Hope everyone enjoyed it!

We want to thank SIAM and IMA for funding this event, and finally a huge thanks to everyone who came. Keep an eye out for the next one- probably around May or June.
