Friday 7th June 2019SIAM-IMA Student Chapter Conference, 2019

Our annual SIAM-IMA Student Chapter will be held on Friday 7th June 2019 at Reading University. We have 3 confirmed keynote speakers: Nick Trefethen from the University of Oxford, Valentina Escott-Price from the University of Cardiff and our own Karl-Mikael Perfekt. They'll cover a range of topics from applied numerical analysis, biostatistics and pure mathematics, so there will be something for everyone. We'll be announcing futher details later in the year and we will also be looking for contributions from you! Details will appear here For now, please save the date in your diaries!

Thursday 28th February, 4pmSIAM Seminar Watch Party

On Thursday 28th February we will stream a seminar from the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE19) in Washington. Please join us from 4pm in room 304. We will be streaming two talks: 4.15pm: "Data-Driven Discovery and Control of Complex Systems: Uncovering Interpretable and Generalizable Nonlinear Models " - Steven Brunton, University of Washington, U.S. 4.45pm: ”The Singular Value Decomposition: Anatomy of an Algorithm, Optimizing for Performance " - Jack Dongarra,University of Tennessee, Knoxville, U.S. Some snacks, beer and soft drinks will be provided. 1 November 2018 - July 2019PhD Seminar Series 2018/19

Our student seminar series is back! Kindly organised by Giulia, the seminars take place every other Thursday at 1pm. Check the website for details of the upcoming talk and the room (usually room 212, Maths). All PhD students are invited to attend. Contact Giulia if you wish to present your work- its a great opportunity to practise your communication skills and get feedback, especially if you have an upcoming conference!

This year, in addition to Reading Postgrads, every month a fellow PhD student in Maths or Statistics from other UK universities is invited to visit our Department and give a talk during our seminars. This activity has been kindly sponsored by the QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics ( and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
