Research
We are one of the leading departments of mathematics and statistics in the United Kingdom, in the top three UK departments measured by EPSRC funding per member of staff. A percentage of over 85% of our research was rated internationally recognised, internationally excellent, or world class in the most recent (2008) Research Assessment Exercise. A large part of our current research interests in mathematics are at the interface of pure and applied areas, while the statistics group has expertise in several areas of applied statistics. There are also a number of interdisciplinary research projects that are currently active. Research in the department is organised into several research groups which overlap and interract significantly:
- Pure, Applicable, and Numerical Analysis, including
◊ Analytic Number Theory
◊ Operator Theory
◊ Spectral Theory
◊ Inverse Problems and Data Assimilation
◊ Nonlinear PDEs
◊ Linear Waves
◊ Statistical Physics and Complex Systems
◊ Centre for the Mathematics Of Human Behaviour
◊ Numerical Analysis
◊ Mathematical Biology
We run an active PhD programme associated with these research groups, and linked to the MAGIC consortium. We also participate in a number of national and international research networks, including
