How we teach you

Perspectives with Mathematics and Statistics

students in a tutorialOur postgraduate teaching programmes aim to lead you into cutting-edge research in the mathematical sciences, or into a successful career in industry. You can expect a combination of small-group lectures, seminars, tutorials and group work in interaction with a number of experienced and engaging teachers and researchers from our faculty. As a postgraduate, we take you seriously in your own contributions and perspective within Mathematics, Statistics and their applications.

Fascinating network of scientists

As a postgraduate student, you are part of a fascinating network of scientists and their international collaborators. At Reading we often host international workshops and conferences, for example, Waves2007 with 230 participants from all continents. Our postgraduate students take part in such activities and explore the power of enabling the science of mathematics in a modern world.

Programme structure

Technically, the MSc consists of several lecture-based modules plus a dissertation. The weight is set by 120 credits of course work and 60 credits for the dissertation, amounting in a total of 180 credits. Core MSc modules either range one term with 10 credits, or span two terms and count 20 credits: optional modules sometimes run for a shorter period within a term. MSc students take about 6 core or optional modules in the autumn and spring terms and then focus on the dissertation.
