Katherine Howes

Mathematics, PhD

I initially graduated with a Mathematics BSc(Hons) degree at the University of Reading in 2008. The environment in the Maths department was so friendly and someone was always willing to help out. So I took the decision to return to the department in 2012 after a few years of working in the 'real world'. I have now submitted my PhD which, at a very high level, focused on how to more accurately estimate conditions of a model state (e.g. weather conditions) by accounting for the fact models contain error. Both the academic staff and admin staff at the uni have been fab throughout my PhD. I have very much enjoyed the PhD experience and was very fortunate to be in an office with a dart board and such great people which have become really close friends. Throughout my PhD I have got to travel to workshops and conferences in a variety of places including in Italy and even America. I have taken on extra work throughout my PhD which has widened my skill set and potential avenues for the future which has included: teaching tutorial classes, private maths tuition and working with students that have disabilities. I am due to graduate summer 2016 and am very much looking forward to life as a Dr!

Noeleene Mallia

Mathematics, PhD

After graduating from the University of Reading with an MMath in 2013 I decided to stay on and study for a PhD in Mathematics. The University particularly appealed to me due to its excellent postgraduate reputation and since I had found the atmosphere in the department to be exceptionally friendly and supportive during my undergraduate degree.

As a PhD student I had the opportunity to work not only in research but also gain some teaching experience. I also had the opportunity to present my work to a variety of audiences which gave me the motivation to pursue my work with greater confidence.

My time at Reading has enabled me to grow, not only as a Mathematician but also as a person. I have made friendships that will last a lifetime and am looking forward to the direction in which my PhD will take me.

BBHATTACHARYAThe University of Reading appealed to me after my first degree because of its excellent postgraduate reputation and especially the Master's course in the Numerical Solution of differential Equations (now called Mathematics of Scientific and Industrial Computation).

I completed the masters degree in 2006 and this gave me the direction, confidence, motivation and opportunity to follow on to a PhD in Food Biosciences and Mathematics, also at Reading.During my PhD I have had the opportunity to work not only in a research environment but also with industrial partners.

My time at Reading has enabled me to explore the mathematical modelling of cholesterol metabolism in humans, an area which I would not previously have considered as a route for my studies in Mathematics, and I look forward to the direction in which my PhD will take me.

Moss Mokgolele

Mathematics, PhD

MMOKGOLELEI am currently employed as a lecturer of Mathematics in Botswana College of Agriculture.I enjoyed my undergraduate time at Reading very much and so, when my employer offered me study leave, I decided to come back to Reading in October 2005 to read for a PhD.

The atmosphere in the Maths Department in Reading is friendly and helpful and I have enjoyed the social life both in and out of the Department again.

Laura Stewart

Mathematics, PhD

LSTEWARTAfter graduating from the University of Bath with an MMATH in 2005, I spent 6 months in the Mathematics department at Reading working on an externally funded research project. The following year I began my PhD, revisiting and developing many of the ideas generated in my previous research.

"The support of departmental members was fundamental in my choice to return to Reading for further study"

Jenny Morrell

Mathematics, PhD

Jenny completed an MPhys degree with First Class honours in June 2003 and was sponsored by AWE Aldermaston for a PhD.

"The academic and administrative staff were exceedingly helpful, supportive and knowledgeable. My time at Reading helped prepare me to enter my chosen profession with purpose, dedication and enthusiasm for my subject and the wider world. During my time at Reading, I made friendships that will last a lifetime."
