PhD/DStat programmes

Students talking

As a postgraduate student in the department of Maths and Stats at Reading, you will be part of a large and vibrant group of around 40 postgraduate students working towards a PhD or a DStat, in addition to a thriving group of newly completed PhDs working as postdoctoral researchers.

In the first year of your degree course, we require you follow a programme of relevant postgraduate lecture courses. You will also be involved in opportunities to communicate your work and networking with other researchers, presenting seminar, speaking at conferences and workshops, and visiting or hosting researchers from elsewhere.

Some of our PhD students are involved in interdisciplinary projects or projects with an industrial partner. In these cases they are followed by at least two supervisors, and interact with a wider range of staff . Where industry is involved, students typically spend 4-week placements each year with the company.

Our Professional Doctorate in Statistics, the DStat, allows professional statisticians in institutions the opportunity to complete doctoral training whilst remaining at work. The programme includes a research core, plus components covering technical statistical skills and continuing professional development.
