Enterprise activities
Research undertaken within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides many techniques which are of great value to businesses both in the UK and abroad. Staff in the department are actively engaged in a number of exciting enterprise activities applying their knowledge and expertise to a wide range of real world problems.
We have a number of collaborative grants and consultancy agreements including
- Collaborative research with Unilever R&D (Unilever Discover) on mathematical models of spread of moods through social networks, and consultancy on modelling and analysis of large networks.
- Collaborative research and development with Scottish and Southern Energy on the identification and analysis of energy usage patterns from smart meter data; forecasting and inference for demand on local networks, for the management of demands and storage on smart grids
- Together with Scottish and Southern Energy, Honeywell, GE Energy, Bracknell Forest Council, and KEMA Consulting, the University of Reading is a full partner in the Thames Valley Vision programme demonstrating next generation low carbon network technology and solutions. The partners lead a wider consortium of local companies based in the Thames Valley including Waitrose, 3M, BT, and C&W
- Collaborative research and development with I2 and Market Sentinel, collaborating on and exploiting applications of the Mathematics Of Large Technological Evolving Networks (MOLTEN)
- Counting Lab Ltd is a University of Reading spin out company providing smart analytics by developing data driven models methods and applications for customer/public facing sectors methods. Starting in December 2010, and exploiting know-how and prototypes developed within Mathematics and Statistics, Counting Lab has already closed its first few translational projects
- Research and development on the application of mathematics in Counter Terrorism
- Work with pharmaceutical companies and charities on applying novel statistical methodology to clinical trial design
- Funding via the Darwin Initiative for statistical methods for elephant conservation and monitoring
