A personal blog entry, really. After a month of car trouble, which has been rather expensive, I am looking forward to a busy month. I have been invited to a BectaX event : "#BectaX will congregate the very best thinkers and doers from education, digital media and policy. Together they will explore how pedagogic theories can be turned into learner-shaped education for the 21st Century"
Had a great informal session with members of Reading University Students' Union today, introducing the ideas of Digital Identity and giving a brief introduction to the latest This Is Me Workbook.
At lunch time today we had a seminar on Digital Identity, well actually it was more of a discussion on Digital Identity.
We spent quite a lot of time discussing Digital Identity for academics, and how many of us will “Google” colleagues, but seemingly are unaware of what those colleagues find when they “Google” us.
Should we set up a challenge to get pairs of people to work together and critique each other’s Digital Identity?
Today we had a coffee meeting - it was nice to see some of lecturers out of their offices/lecture theatres, and having a chat about research, life, the universe and everything. I like the venue, in our Students' Union, but they do have the music rather too loud to be able to have a civilized conversation, which is a shame. On the other hand, they do the best coffee on campus (in my opinion) and you can sit outside, where the music is at least at a more manageable level - but I guess most people prefer the temperature indoors!
I do like Doodle for fixing meeting times, if you haven't tried it it is definitely worth a try: http://www.doodle.com/
However there are certain frustrations with Doodle when other people are slow at completing polls, I find that I have a number of times in my diary marked (meeting?) and we still haven't actually finalised the meeting we were doodling for.
The seminar programme is taking shape. Anyone from SSE is welcome to come to these seminars, which are an informal opportunity to discuss research interests and progress around a weekly theme.
Weds 3rd Mar, 13:00 Sullivan room : Pat Parslow leads on Fuzzy Ontologies and conscious systems
Weds 10th Mar - unfortunately there are no rooms available
We have just finalised a new workbook for Health Professionals who want to explore their Digital Identity.
As with previous workbooks it is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike licence, which means others can re-use (as long as they attribute), this worked really well with teh first workbook and spread our word far.
You can download for free from our Lulu store http://stores.lulu.com/odinlab, or pay a small amount and have a paper copy delivered to your door!
At the moment, the notifications mechanism for people requesting to join groups is not as good as it could be. One way to ease this up is to have open groups (certainly an option, but rather undermining some of the privacy options we have striven to have in place!).
Thank you to those who were able to make it to the first seminar. It was very useful to be able to have an open, informal discussion about our areas of interest in general, and in this case issues relating to the LinkSphere social network, and the KTP project on a collaborative space for CPD for chiropractors.
The plan is to find a 'permanent home' for the seminars, and make them at 13:00 on Wednesdays.
