Students with children

Little girlIf you have children, we have excellent childcare facilities on campus to make life as easy as possible for you.  The Little Owl Pre-School has places for children aged 2 to 5 years, while Little Learners – a nursery run by the Student Union – caters for children from 3 months to 5 years.

Further information on childcare in the Reading area is available from the Reading Children's Information Centre on 0118 950 9499.

The Students' Union (RUSU) currently runs a 94-place (including Pre-School Nursery) Nursery. The Little Learners Day Nursery caters for children from 3 months to 5 years and is open between 8.30am and 6.00pm for 36 weeks of the year and until 5.30pm for the remainder of the year. Staffed by a team of fully qualified child-carers, the Nursery offers a caring and stimulating environment in a purpose-built environment in which your child can play and learn. For further information contact the Nursery Manager on +44 (0) 118 378 4128 or visit the Nursery website.

The Little Owl Pre-School is open to the children of all current students. There are 24 places each morning for children aged 2 to 5 years. The Little Owl Pre-School operates from 9.15am to 12:15pm during school term times. Over the years they have built up an excellent reputation for providing the best possible care and education in a safe discreet location. The Pre-School is located at the Earley Gate corner of the University of Reading Campus and has a large, secure private garden with plenty of play equipment for the children. Inside the pre-school has a wide variety of toys, creative media, role-play and construction equipment and a large area of space allowing freedom of movement that facilitates concentration and communication.

Following their recent Ofsted inspection (November 2014) they have now been graded as OUTSTANDING. Some comments include: 'staff are extremely positive role models and give consistent guidelines that support children to manage their emotions and to adjust their behaviour around other children… The quality of teaching is outstanding.'

Parents give high praise to the provision. Some of the views expressed were: ' I am so happy with the pre-school; the staff have really helped my child make good progress' and 'my child can't wait to come.'

For further information please visit the Little Owl Pre-School website.

Emergency Contacts

Students who need to give their children's school or childminder an emergency contact telephone number in the University, should contact the appropriate departmental secretary who will be happy to help. Students should leave a copy of their lecture timetable with the secretary concerned, plus the name of the child, school or childminder. You should note, however, that secretaries cannot undertake to be permanently available on the telephone, nor can there be any guarantee that a student can be found.
