Computing facilities

Computing facilities in the Library are managed by IT Services. They can be used by anyone with a valid University of Reading username and password. Guest access may be available for non-members on application to IT Services - see Visiting staff/Students or Guest usernames for further information.

Facilities available

  • 80+ PCs
  • Scanners
  • Printers

Most of these PCs are held in the S@iL (Student Access to Independent Learning) facility on the 1st Floor of the Library - full details can be found on the S@iL web site.

There are a few PCs on the Ground Floor for quick ecomms, such as checking email.

Using laptops in the Library

Power for laptops

It is possible to plug in laptops using power surge-protected sockets in the Knowledge Exchange on the Ground Floor, and in designated areas of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors. Laptops should be used on battery power in other areas.

Network access

It is possible to connect laptops to the wireless network throughout the building. However, the large blocks of metal bookshelves can affect the signal strength in certain areas on each floor. Every effort has been made give as wide a coverage as possible in the vicinity of the study desks.

For more information see Wireless Networks.
