Foundation Degree Students: joining the Library
Anyone may use the University Library for reference and private study. This gives access to all our printed materials on the open shelves. You will be asked to sign the Visitors' Book on arrival as an undertaking to abide by the Library Rules.
If you are a member of one of the following Foundation Degree courses you will be given Library membership free of charge. You will receive an External Borrower Card from your Course Leader on joining your course.

If you are a member of one of the following Foundation Degree courses you can join the Library at a discounted cost of £40:

Joining
If you are on a Foundation Degree Course where you are expected to pay for Library membership, complete Sections 1, 2, 3 and 7 of the External borrower application form (PDF). You do not require a sponsor.
Come to the Ground Floor Information Desk at the University Library between 09:00 - 17:00, Monday to Thursday, or 10:00 - 17:00 on Friday with:
- the completed application form
- either your Library or Student Card for the College you are a member of, or some other form of identification eg drivers’ licence
- your payment (if applicable)
Borrowing
You will be given an External borrowers card which enables you to borrow:
- five Standard loan items
- these can be borrowed for up to three weeks unless recalled by another person
- you will be fined 50p per day for late returns and 80 per day if an item is recalled and you do not return it by the new recalled due date
Using Unicorn's self-service features
When you register you will be given a PIN which you can use to access the self-service features on the Unicorn catalogue, such as renewing your loans, placing holds (on Standard loan items only), and viewing your account.
Access to e-resources
Currently you will not be able to access most of our e-resources as our licence agreements cover only current students and staff of the University of Reading. Ways of extending access to online resources to Foundation Students in the future are being investigated.
