Theses

The Library receives a copy of all theses accepted for the degrees of PhD and MPhil from the Examinations Office.

Masters dissertations are not held by the Library. They might be available in the relevant University department.

Searching for theses on Unicorn

Theses received since 1979 have full entries on the Unicorn catalogue. Theses received prior to 1979 have a brief entry on Unicorn.

It is possible to search Unicorn just for theses produced by a specific School/Department by performing an author keyword search for the department and using the Collection qualifier "Theses" (see the page on Searching Unicorn for theses for instructions on how to do this).

Details of all theses PhDs and MPhils are included in the Index to Theses. They are also made available for digitisation on request via the British Library's EThOS service.

Recently received PhD and MPhil theses

The lists below give brief details of most theses received and catalogued by the Library in recent years.

Please note that from August 2010 we will not be adding to these lists. Search the Unicorn catalogue to find our latest acquisitions (see the page on Searching Unicorn for theses for instructions on how to do this).

Consulting a thesis

Most theses can be consulted within the Library - they cannot be borrowed.

Some theses have been digitised and made available via the British Library EThOS Service. These are available to download immediately via the EThOS website (see the page on Ordering a British thesis via EThOS for details on how to use this service).

A few theses are not available for consultation, and these are marked as "restricted". Full details of the duration of such restrictions can be found on the Unicorn catalogue.
