Browsing the shelves on Unicorn
There are two ways you can use the Unicorn catalogue to browse the shelves from your PC.
Nearby items on shelf
If you look up a book, you can use the "Nearby items on shelf" option to look at the books that are shelved in the same section. If the book you want is already on loan you may discover other similar books making a trip to the Library worthwhile.
- Search for a specific book or a subject.
- If you retrieve a list of results, click on the Details button next to one of them.
- When viewing the details, look for the "Nearby items on shelf" link on the left of the display (see screenshot below).
- Click on this to see items that are at the same Call Number. Use the "Previous" and "Next" options on the toolbar to move through the list.
Search by Call Number
This search allows you to type in a specific Call Number and browse the titles of books located in that section. Just like you were physically in the Library, you need to specify the Library and section you want to browse.
- Select Advanced search from the list of options under the search box on the Quick search screen.
- Select "Call Number" from the list of Other searches on the right of the Advanced Search screen.
- Type in your Call Number, including any section prefix required eg Folio-- for the large sized books. Other examples include:
338.47664 to browse the normal size books on food industry economics
Folio--945 to browse the Folio books on Italian history
Children's Non-fiction--330 to browse the Children's Non Fiction section of the Teaching Practice Collection - Select the Library from the pick-list.
- Click on Search.
- Use the "Previous" and "Next" options on the toolbar to move through the list.
