Charges for lost items

If you lose a Library book or other type of publication you will be charged for its replacement. If you do not report the loss to us you will also be charged a processing fee when you are billed for not returning it.

Please contact us if you think you may have lost an item you have borrowed - email library@reading.ac.uk.

The following charges are made:

 

Items reported lost to the Library

 

Original purchase price or standard replacement charge of £35

Items billed for by the Library (ie not reported lost)

Original purchase price or standard replacement charge of £35
+ £10
processing fee per item

Journals 

 Full replacement cost

  • We reserve the right to charge the full replacement cost of an item that has been lost.
  • It is not possible to refund payments for lost items if subsequently found.
  • Processing fees will be applied even if the item is returned.  

Methods of payment

Cash

Pay your fines or charges (of any amount) using cash at the Collection Point or Ground Floor Information Desk. During staffed hours only.

Fines Payment Machines

Pay your fines or charges of up to £12 using coins on the Fines Payment Machines. The Machines are in the Main Hall and the Course Collection connected to the Self-Service Points. Change is given. Available anytime the Library is open.

Credit/Debit Card payments

Pay fines or charges of £5 or more using your Credit/Debit card at the Ground Floor Information Desk. Telephone payments can be made by calling (0118) 378 8770.

Credit/Debit card payments available at the following times only:

  • Monday - Thursday, 09:00 - 16:30
  • Friday, 10:00 - 16:30

Cheque

Pay your fines or charges by cheque (made payable to 'University of Reading') at the Collection Point or Ground Floor Information Desk. During staffed hours only. 

To pay by post, please send your cheque to the Library with your name and Student/Library Card number and details of the fine or charge you are paying.
