Key sites

  • BAILII
    Provides free access to British and Irish primary legal materials. It also links to cases, legislation and journals throughout the world.

  • BAILII Open Law
    An ongoing project to identify and digitise cases that are important in teaching and learning the law. BAILII is digitising the leading cases in the core areas of criminal law, constitutional law, contract, land law, tort and trusts, and in ten other subject areas. Old Law Commission reports and consultation papers are also being digitised.

  • Eagle-i
    Electronic access to global legal information, compiled by the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London.

  • Lawlinks
    Annotated list of web sites compiled at the University of Kent.

  • Intute: Social Sciences - Law
    (Incorporates the Social Sciences Information Gateway). It provides guidance and legal information resources. It forms part of the online subject resource call Intute which covers resources from the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Each site is evaluated and classified by subject specialists.
    Please note: Updates to Intute ceased in July 2011. Links on the website will no longer be checked.

Guides and tutorials

  • Internet for Law
    One of a series of tutorials written for the Intute Virtual Training Suite. This tutorial aims to improve Internet information skills, knowledge of key Internet sites, Internet search skills and critical thinking skills. The links basket option provides a useful listing of sites relevant to Law.

  • Lawbore
    Created by Emily Allbon at City University, London, this law student's guide includes topic guides (web resources and full-text documents) and Learnmore (talking slide shows about using legal abbreviations and legal libraries, and a video guide to mooting do's and don'ts).

  • Duhaime's Law Dictionary
    Written in plain language and provided free by lawyer Lloyd Duhaime.

  • Directgov (formerly) UK Government
    Links to all central and local government websites. Searchable by subject over the whole site.

  • Legal hub
    Features topical articles written by expert practitioners, available by free registration. Also includes free searching of the Bar Directory and the Expert Witness Directory.

  • Legal resources in the UK and Ireland
    Wide ranging site maintained by Delia Venables.  Including information on solicitors, barristers, organizations, law schools and careers, and legal advice.

  • Martindale Legal Topics Search
    Search Articles on topical legal issues, mainly from US practitioners. Free access to full-text and to newsletters is available on registration.

  • WLR Daily
    Notes on recent cases, compiled by the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting. Coverage goes back to January 2008.

  • EU Law Blog
    Information mainly from official sources and intended for students, academics and practitioners.

  • Inner Temple Library Blog
    Covers new cases and legislation, web sites of professional bodies and government departments, legal news stories from the quality national newspapers and from the BBC, Reuters and Out-Law.com.

Foreign/International Law

  • ASIL (American Society of International Law)
    Gives access to the American Society of International Law's electronic database (EISIL) of primary source documents, websites and other research tools, broken down into 13 broad categories covering around 300 topics and to the narrative ASIL guide to assist users in conducting online research in international law.

  • Audiovisual Library of International Law
    Produced within the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs. This multimedia resource consists of historic archives, the lecture series and the research library, with links to treaties, jurisprudence, publications and documents and scholarly writings.

  • FindLaw
    Indexes and links to full text of US federal and state legislation and cases.

  • FLAG (Foreign Law Guide)
    Gateway to the holdings of foreign, international and comparative law in UK universities and national institutions.

  • Flare index to treaties
    Contains details of over 1500 of the most significant multilateral treaties from 1856 to the present day. Indicates print versions of the full texts and links to the text online. Searchable by keywords, date and place of treaty.

  • WorldLII (World Legal Information Institute)
    Links to full text cases, legislation and journals throughout the world.

Lawyers

  • Bar Directory
    Information on barristers' chambers and practising barristers in independent practice in the UK only.

  • Legal500 series
    In-depth independent recommendations of law firms and lawyers in over 70 countries.

  • Martindale Lawyer Locator
    A world-wide search for lawyers. It is possible to browse or search by area of practice (eg banking law).

  • Solicitors-Online
    Information about practising solicitors and law firms in England and Wales, provided by the Law Society. Searchable by name and specialism.

  • Waterlow legal
    Directories of solicitors' firms, barristers, international law firms and legal services.

    Guide to mooting aimed at law students.

Parliament

  • European Parliament
    Debates, activities, press releases, and subject documents are amongst the material available. A RSS tool brings together news updates from various sources.

  • United Kingdom Parliament
    Information about the history and working of the UK Parliament, its members and staff and activities. Publications (Hansard and Committee Reports) and Research Papers are in full-text.

Training and education

    Information about solicitors and barristers with tips and advice.  Blogs, including ones concerning LLB students, trainee solicitors and junior barristers are listed

  • Law Campus
    Supports academic study and legal research training to help you get the most out of LexisNexis resources.  Including latest cases, legislation and legal news, teaching and learning videos, information about LexisNexis Student Associates, and availability of email to ask an academic trainer any questions about LexisLibrary.

    Guides to legal education and careers. Information about law firms and legal topics is also available.

    Information on legal education.

Organisations & institutions

  • Bar Council
    Regulatory and representative body for barristers in England and Wales. All aspects of the Bar Council's and barrister's work are covered.

  • Law Society
    The professional body for solicitors in England and Wales. News, events, recruitment, qualifying as a solicitor, and guide to professional conduct are amongst the topics covered.
