Image databases
See our image and sound resources for sources of images. These resources have good quality, copyright cleared content for teaching and learning.
The main resource for art images is Bridgeman Education.
Other online resources
These resources are not specifically for finding images, but do contain image collections.
- Oxford Art Online - Use the image search to find images within the resource. Also links to images on external websites, but please note these may have copyright restrictions on their use
- Credo Reference - Many images are supplied by the Bridgeman Art Library Archive. Search for a title of a painting, or run an advanced search for a topic, clicking the prefer results with images radio button
- JSTOR - There is a facility to search for images within JSTOR articles. From a basic keyword search, the results list has a tab for images in JSTOR. Alternatively use the advanced search using captions. (Please note that we do not subscribe to ARTstor)
Internet resources
See useful websites for art, in particular the Images and the Galleries and Museums sections. Many museum websites have online catalogues with images eg National Gallery.
Some resources eg Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) are specifically for educational use. For other websites you must check for details of copyright restrictions before downloading any images.
