Citing references: standards

Standards give definitions, principles and some examples of citing references, but very little explanation. You will usually also need to consult a style manual. The following British Standards have been produced:

  • Recommendations for references to published materials. BS 1629
  • Recommendations for citing and referencing published material. BS 5605
  • Specification for abbreviation of title words and titles of publications. BS 4148 (ISO 4)
  • Information and documentation. Bibliographic references. Electronic documents or parts thereof. BS ISO 690-2

All of the above are available on British Standards Online.

There are also international standards. These are listed in the ISO Catalogue. Use Browse ISO Standards by ICS and look in the section: Generalities. Information sciences. Publishing.
