Citing a legal reference

You should include the following elements, depending on the type of legal publication you want to cite. The exact style will vary according to the citation system you are using.

Proceedings of the House of Commons

  1. Hansard HC
  2. Date of proceedings 
  3. Column number

An Act of the House of Commons

  1. Name
  2. Year

Companies Act 1985

A point in an Act

  1. Name 
  2. Year 
  3. Section

Case report

  1. Claimant(plaintiff) v defendant, in civil cases, or the Crown v defendant, in criminal cases 
  2. Year in brackets – in square brackets, if it is needed to find the volume of law reports, or in round brackets, if the volumes are numbered consecutively throughout the series of law reports 
  3. Volume number, if it is so numbered 
  4. Abbreviation of the series of law reports 
  5. Page number, on which the case report starts, or, case number

Case reports - neutral citations

From 2001 neutral citations were, also, assigned to cases. This form of citation is not tied to any series of law reports. It includes:

  1. Year 
  2. Court abbreviation 
  3. Division of Court abbreviation 
  4. Case number 
  5. Division of Court abbreviation, if not before case number
