EndNote Web
What is EndNote Web?
EndNote Web is an online version of the EndNote reference software. It is free to subscribers to ISI Web of Knowledge. It has a simplified interface with fewer of the complex options available in the full software version of EndNote.
Who would use EndNote Web?
Undergraduates - because it isn't as complex as the full EndNote software. However, we still recommend using the full EndNote or the referencing tools in Word 2007.
Reasons why we do not recommend using EndNote Web
There are several reasons we do not recommend EndNote Web and are not offering full support for it:
- A plugin is required to automatically insert references into Word documents (Cite While You Write), and to save online references to your library.
- The basic built-in referencing tools in Word 2007 may be sufficient for undergraduates.
- The full EndNote is more sophisticated and is more appropriate for postgraduate and staff use.
- You may not be able to access your references if you leave the University or move to another institution (you may have to take out a personal subscription).

Help
We will not be providing direct training and support for EndNote Web, so there may be issues with support if you are using it on your own computer. We are not actively discouraging its use; we believe it is a better investment of your time to get to grips with the full EndNote software for reference management.
If you have any questions regarding EndNote Web, you should check the official EndNote Web support website for tutorials and contact details. Alternatively you may contact your liaison librarian.
Other institutions offer advice on the use of EndNote Web. See for example the EndNote Web advice from University of Queensland, which highlights the issues such as privacy and lack of customisation.
