EndNote Online Search

The EndNote Online search uses connection files to allow you to connect directly to a database from within EndNote and download into your Library. Very few databases offer this method.

We do not recommend using the EndNote Online Search to find references because:

  • it offers very limited searching functionality making it hard to refine your search
  • there can be technical difficulties with the z3950 technology it uses

Searching a database directly and then using Direct export to get the references into your library is the best method, followed by using a Filter if direct export is not available.

However, the Online Search can work well when searching Library catalogues. It is possible to use it to download records from our own Unicorn catalogue. For best results make sure that your search is specific and well constructed - too general a search might retrieve thousands of useless records and it not easy to refine your search once you have your results.

Unicorn catalogue connection file

If you want to search the Unicorn catalogue using the Online Search facility you will need to download the University of Reading connection file.

Download the University of Reading catalogue connection file - save the downloaded connection file into your Connection files folder within the EndNote program folder.

Help

For guidance on using EndNote's Online Search facility to connect to a catalogue, please see our EndNote guide 2: downloading records from a library catalogue (PDF).

To find out what method a database uses, and for help using it with EndNote, take a look at the information page for the database via the Databases a-z list.
