Image and sound resources

If you want to find images, audio or video to help with your teaching, learning or research some of the following resources may be of use - many of them include material specially licensed for educational use in Higher Education, others are freely available websites and collections and some provide details of content which may be available to purchase or find in other libraries / archives.

The content in these resources may be subject to restrictions on how it may be used - check the guidance on the access page for the resource, help pages on freely accessible websites or contact the Multimedia Manager for advice.

Images

General resources

  • Britannica Image Quest - high resolution images across all subjects for educational use
  • MediaPlus - formerly MediaHub - high resolution images across all subjects for educational use, including user generated content from UK University members

Subject / topic based resources

  • Bridgeman images - available via Credo Reference, a collection of historical images including artworks, architecture, sculpture, illustrations, artefacts and portraits of historical figures (University username and password required)

  • British Library images - collection of digitised images from the British Library's historic collections on the photo sharing website Flickr. Free to use, remix and repurpose
  • Carl Giles Digital Archive - images and other archive material relating to the political cartoonist Carl Giles
  • Europeana - Digitised collection of images, sound and video on European cultural history 
  • Getty Open Content - images from Getty collections which are public domain artworks, free to use, modify and reuse for any purpose
  • Internet archive book images - historical images digitised and made available free to use. Hint: Type keywords into the search box and choose "Search Internet archive book images' photostream"
  • John Johnson Collection - an archive of printed ephemera, such as posters, handbills and prints from the 19th Century. Including items on entertainment, the book trade, crime, murder and execution and advertising
  • JSTOR Global Plants - images of plant specimens and scientific drawings of plants from various herbaria
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art - images from the museum's collection of artworks, sculpture, costume, photographs and more. Images marked OASC (Open Access for Scholarly Content) may be used, free of charge, for any scholarly work
  • ScienceDirect - you can choose to search for the figures and tables from articles in this full text database. Select the images option in the quick search
  • Screenonline - images from film and television history illustrating twentieth century British social history
  • Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) - image database of the visual arts, freely available and copyright-cleared for use in learning, teaching and research in the UK.

  • American History in Video - newsreels covering important events in America from the 1890s to the 1980s
  • BFI InView - video clips showing Britain's changing political, economic and social landscape from 1920-2005
  • Black Studies in Video - documentaries and interviews covering the African-American experience
  • British Pathé - a collection of 85,000 cinema newsreels from British Pathé showing global culture, historical events and news available via Youtube
  • Europeana - digitised collection of video, images and sound on European cultural history
  • History in Video - a comprehensive source of historical videos
  • LGBT Studies in Video - documentaries, interviews and archival footage relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
  • The March of Time - newsreels broadcast in American cinemas from 1935-1951
  • Meet the Press - interviews, panels and debates from this long running American show
  • Screenonline - video clips from film and television history illustrating twentieth century British social history
  • Voices of science - video clips from the British Library exploring life stories in environmental science, British technology and engineering from 1940 to the present
  • World History in Video - documentaries covering human history from the earliest civilizations to the late twentieth century
  • World Newsreels Online 1929-1966 - news films from early twentieth century

Locating videos, broadcasts & films

  • BBC Genome - searches across details of BBC television broadcasts from 1923-2009. Based on scanned issues of the Radio Times it provides listings information, programme synopses and cast lists.
  • BUFVC Search - cross searches nine online databases relating to film, television and radio content including TV broadcasts, commercially produced films, newsreels, Shakespeare content and independent radio collections
  • Moving image gateway - includes over 1,000 websites relating to moving image and sound materials which have been divided into subject categories
  • TRILT - database with details of UK TV broadcasts since 1995

Audio

General resources

  • BBC Genome - searches across details of BBC radio broadcasts from 1923-2009. Based on scanned issues of the Radio Times it provides listings information, programme synopses and cast lists.
  • Box of Broadcasts (BoB) - audio of programmes on selected free to air radio channels
  • iTunes U - an app for your mobile device which lets you listen to clips from lectures on a variety of academic subjects from Universities around the world
  • MediaPlus - formerly MediaHub - audio clips for educational use
  • Radio programmes - If you would like a copy of a radio programme see our guidance on recording broadcasts

DVDs, CDs, etc

The Library also has DVDs, audio CDs and other multimedia materials. They are shelved with the books and arranged by subject using Call Numbers and most of them can be borrowed - you can find them in the Enterprise catalogue.
