Athens information for academic visitors

Academic visitors to the University are not automatically entitled to access our licensed e-resources. This is due to the terms of our academic licences. Therefore, as an academic visitor, your University account will not be automatically enabled for the Athens authentication system, which is used to control access to most e-resources.

You have to join the Library before applying. You can usually make an application for Athens access when joining the Library. If this doesn't happen please print and complete the Athens access request form (PDF) and send it to Celia Ayres, Head of Systems and Services at the Main Library.

If access is granted:

  • a separate Athens account will be supplied which will allow you to use the protected resources from campus machines only (do not download the Reading Athens cookie)
  • you will not be able to access resources remotely
  • you will also only be allowed to use the resources for the business of the University of Reading
