Scanning course reading

All scanned files made available to students must comply with the terms and conditions of the Copyright Licensing Agency's Photocopying and Scanning HE Licence. Please note that the rules on what can be scanned are different from the rules on what can be photocopied.

Scanning rules

  • Material should be already owned by the University in its original printed format (for material in online format eg e-journal articles see the information on adding PDFs or links in Blackboard)
  • Only designated persons may make and distribute scanned material.
  • It should be made available as a scanned file in a restricted way only to students taking a specific module - preferably this is achieved using Blackboard.
  • Material should be covered within the other terms and conditions of the licence. This includes:
    - complying with quality control terms
    - being no more than the prescribed number of pages
    - display a copyright notice.
See the Scanning flowchart (PDF) for more information.
  • Material scanned should be reported to the CLA in an annual audit.

What will we do?

In order to fully comply with the Licence terms and conditions, scanning should be undertaken by the Library. The Library will:

  • undertake all the relevant copyright checks
  • arrange for the file to be scanned, using an external agent which produces files to high standard, which also meet SENDA requirements
  • deposit and manage scanned files securely within the Blackboard Academic Suite’s content management area
  • report all scanned files to the CLA as required under the terms of the licence.
