Access
There are two disabled parking spaces in the front car park and these are the closest to the Library entrance. There are three additional parking spaces for disabled users at the rear of the Library. See the map:
Enter the building via the Main Entrance and take the lift to the Library entrance on the 1st Floor.
Enter the building at the Main Entrance and take the lift to the Library entrance on the 1st Floor.
Key for disabled users to access the Library
The layout of the Library means that disabled users have to be issued with a key to access the Ground and 2nd Floors. Bulmershe students and lecturers will be offered their own key to keep during term term. Collect the key from Elizabeth Schlackman who will also show you how the doors operate and where they are located.
If you are a Main Library student you will not have a key to keep but will be issued with one on each visit to Bulmershe Library. On your first visit you should collect a key from the Information Desk and subsequently from the Porter's Lodge (on production of a Union card). There is no charge for the key.
Adapted toilets
These are located on the Ground Floor of the Library block near to the Porters' Lodge.
Procedures in the event of a fire
The following is an outline of action in the event of a fire. Please contact Elizabeth Schlackman for an individual safety tour of the building.
In the event of a fire, a continuous alarm bell will ring. The Library also has a visual alarm system in the form of flashing red lights.
Do not use the lift while the alarm bells ring - in the event of an emergency the lift may stop working.
Make your way to the nearest Fire Exit, identified by the green Fire Exit sign on the door or near it. If you are unable to leave the building without assistance (eg you are a wheelchair user) you should make your way to the lift lobby Refuge Point and remain there. If this is not possible, remain on the landing of one of these Fire Exits. The lift lobby and the landings are protected from fire. The Fire Brigade attend all evacuations and on arrival make a thorough search for remaining occupants.
The evacuation procedures are the same during normal service (Monday to Friday 09:00 - 17:00) and minimal service (Monday to Friday after 17:00, and at weekends). Please note that during minimal service only the Ist Floor is permanently staffed.
