Using other libraries
This page gives information about schemes you can use to access materials at other libraries. As a member of the University of Reading you can usually use other academic libraries. However, if you want to consult another Library's collections please contact the Library concerned before making a special journey. Consult the UK Higher Education research libraries a-z list for contact details.
It is not always necessary to visit libraries directly - Inter-library loans can obtain material from other libraries for you.
How do I find out which other libraries will be useful for me?
- consult the help in your subject - any specialist libraries will be listed there
- search across multiple library catalogues using services such as Copac Academic and National Library Catalogue or InforM25
- ask your tutor for guidance
Can I use my local university library when I go home for the vacations?
The SCONUL Vacation Access Scheme is designed for taught students wanting to use their local university library during vacations. It allows you reference only access to other SCONUL (Society of College, National and Research Libraries) members' libraries during their vacations. You will not be able to borrow. Just remember to take your University of Reading Library/Access Card with you as proof of identity.
Before you join the scheme, why not search your local library's catalogue to see if it will be useful. Go to the UK Higher Education research libraries a-z list
Will I be able to borrow from other university libraries?
Most full-time students will not be able to borrow from another university library. Part-time students, full-time postgraduate students (taught and research), and staff may be able to borrow through registering for one of the other reciprocal access schemes. Consult the Access schemes table (below) to see if any scheme will allow you to borrow.
