Ordering a British thesis via EThOS

You can now order British Theses directly from the British Library via a system called EThOS. This allows you to download digital theses held on the system free of charge and order paper theses for digitisation.

Follow these steps to search for and order your thesis:

  1. Go to EThOS
  2. For full access to the search facility, you need to register and login. Registration is free. Scroll down to bottom of the page and follow the instructions under the grey Login bar. You only need to register the first time you use the system - after that, you just login each time.
  3. When you log in, you will go to a page headed "Your basket". Click on Search at the top of the page.
  4. Enter your search in the box and click Go.
Searching tips! You can limit your search to items which are available for immediate download by ticking the box under the search box. Use the Advanced Search for a wider range of search options.
  5. A list of theses which match your search term will appear. Click on the title of the thesis you require to see further details.

Theses available to download immediately

If the thesis is available to download you need to follow these steps:

  1. Click on Add to basket at the bottom of the page
  2. Click on Checkout. The total payable will be £0.00
  3. You need to agree to the terms and conditions before you click on Create Order. You are given the link to download the thesis.

Note: You can only download the file once!

Theses not available immediately

If the grey bar says "Not yet available for download", you can order the thesis.

  1. Click on the Add to basket button at the bottom of the page.
  2. The British Library team will arrange to have the thesis digitised and will send you the download as soon as it is available.
Note: You can download most theses free of charge. If you require the thesis in a different format - eg CD or paper copy - you can order and pay for it in this format. A scale of charges is shown on the Thesis details page.
