Grants

  • Rosemary Auchmuty has been awarded a British Academy Small research grant of £7048.20 for a project on Civil Partnership Dissolution: expectations and experiences.
  • Robert Barnidge Jr has been awarded £1,245 from the Society of Legal Scholars Research Activities Fund Award to conduct field work in Islamabad, Pakistan over a 10 day period in late-December 2010/early-January 2011.  This is as part of his study leave in spring term 2011, which will be working on the project "Assessing the Legality of Pilotless Drone Attacks Under International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law".
  • Anne Thies has been awarded a Jean Monnet Fellowship at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute in Florence for the academic year 2010/11.  Her research looks at the nature and scope of loyalty obligations of the EU Member States towards the EU in the context of external relations.
  • Anne Thies has secured £8,036 from the John Sherborne Foundation to support another study visit to the UK Mission and several international organisations in Geneva with LLM and PhD students of international law in March 2010.
  • Nowrin Tamanna has been awarded £1,500 (including the School's contribution) under the RETF pump-priming scheme to support her cross-national pilot study entitled "Privatisation of Justice for Faith-based Communities: The Muslim 'Woman' Question".  Awarded in June 2009.
  • Lawrence McNamara has been awarded pump-priming research funding of £1,288 under the Faculty RETF scheme.  The project is entitled "The Regulation of Extreme Hate Music: Hate Speech and Free Speech in Europe".  Awarded in June 2009.
  • Jane Donoghue has been awarded £99,972 by the ESRC to study 'An Examination of the Judicial Role in Specialist Anti-Social Behaviour Response Courts in England & Wales'.  The study is to start on 1 October 2009.  Awarded in May 2009.
  • Samia Bano is part of a team of colleagues (based at Birmingham University and Queen Mary, London) that has been awarded £25,000 by the Ministry of Justice for a three month initial project on Shariah Councils in the UK.  Awarded in March 2009.
  • Lawrence McNamara has secured funding of £309,103.for a joint ESRC/AHRC Research Fellowship on Ideas and Beliefs, which is a part of the major RCUK Global Uncertainties Programme.  Lawrence's project is 'Law, Terrorism and the Right to Know'.  Awarded in February 2009.
