Biographical Details

Tony Downes first came to the School of Law in 1990 as Reader in European Law, having previously been a lecturer at the University of Durham and Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa. He was an undergraduate at the University of Oxford, and studied as a postgraduate at the University of Aix-en-Provence before returning to Oxford to study for the BCL. He was appointed to a Chair in Law in 1993, and was Head of the School of Law from 1994-1997. From 1997-2000 he was Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences.   He has been a regular visitor to the University of Paris X, Nanterre, and to the Europ√§isches Rechtsakademie, Trier.  Although no longer entirely sure, he thinks he used to be an expert in commercial law, notably with a European dimension; he now specialises in trying to get quarts into or out of pint pots.
