The Department of Applied Linguistics at Reading is a Applied Linguistics logo

At undergraduate level, we offer a range of popular BA
programmes in English Language Studies which can be
combined with the study of English Literature, or with a modern foreign language. Our approach to English Language Studies involves students in the exploration of theories of language in the contemporary world, and
in applying this knowledge to the solution of real-world problems.

At postgraduate level, we offer taught MA courses in Applied Linguistics, English Language Teaching, and Applied Linguistic Research. These courses date back to 1975 and we now have more than 1300 graduates in over 40 countries. Our courses are particularly flexible, as they can be followed full- or part-time on campus, or by distance study, or by a combination of both modes of study.

We also have a thriving research community: Particular research strengths include corpus linguistics, literacy, second language acquisition, English language teaching, language and gender, discourse analysis, and phonetics. We are currently supervising a number of PhD students whose topics cover a wide range of fields related to language acquisition and use.
