The University has been awarded funds through the EPSRC's KT Challenge and Entrepreneurship Training for PDRAs to support post-graduate students and post-doctoral researchers in developing their business ideas.
We are looking for 10 - 15 early stage business ideas from either individuals or small groups who will have the opportunity to develop and assess the commercial potential of their ideas.
If you are chosen to be one of the finalists, training and mentoring will be provided over 4 days and the following areas will be covered during this time:
- Business opportunity analysis
- Intellectual property rights and protection
- Company formation and law, the role and duties of Directors
- Marketing (Crossing the Chasm)
- Financial planning
- Writing business plans and doing business presentations.
During the training successful applicants will be required to produce a plan detailing how their idea can be taken forward towards commercialisation. At the end of the training there will be a Dragons Den style panel that will provide feedback on each of the business ideas. There will be a prize fund of £15,000 which will be awarded to one or more of the ideas which must be used to take the business idea to the next stage.
Those wishing to apply should discuss their idea with Anna Price, Business Development Manager within the KTC, before submission.
Eligibility for Awards:
- Current postgraduate student or post-doctoral researcher
- Working in the Science or Life Science Faculties at the University of Reading, or whose research falls within the EPSRC remit
- Able to attend training course dates listed above
Criteria for Awards:
- Are the objectives of the business idea clear?
- Does the idea/opportunity have credibility?
