German Studies
The Department
Research tradition
German Studies, which forms part of the Department of Modern Languages and European Studies, has always adopted a generous interpretation of the subject area. Our research has traditionally covered a wide range of areas involving various aspects of
the culture, language, history, politics, and society of the German‑speaking world.
Facilities and study environment
The Department offers a friendly and supportive environment to research students, and growing collaboration within the
School as well as with cognate departments in neighbouring universities provides opportunities for stimulating contact with other researchers.
Funding opportunities
Grants from Research Councils and other bodies are usually available on a competitive basis, as are the Faculty of Arts' own Postgraduate Studentships. The Department also provides funding towards students' research expenses.
