Digital Image Analysis of Sunshine Cards for Meteorology

Sunshine cards have been used to record daily sunshine duration and to monitor the direct-beam solar irradiance since 19th century. The project aims to digitise these sunshine cards by using advanced image analysis techniques.

Edutainment theory and practice in HIV/AIDS communication: A South African/UK Perspective

The purpose of this project is to explore the planning, implementation, evaluation and outcomes in entertainment education. The student will carry out searches for reports and literature about entertainment education, assist in collecting data on two edutainment case studies in the UK, assist in analysing these case studies, and assist in writing up the results from the investigation.

Efficacy of behavioural interventions for reducing energy consumption

Electrochemical halide sources for adsorption and reaction studies in ultra-high vacuum

The project is to build and characterise a solid electrochemical cell for the deposition of Cl and Br onto single-crystal surfaces for study by surface science techniques. The student will use the cell to make measurements of the surface structure of adsorbed ions by scanning tunnelling microscopy at atomic resolution.

Genomic and genetic analysis of pathogen bacteriophages

Supervisor: Prof Ian Jones

A genomic analysis of pathogen genomes will be done to identify bacteriophage and conserved regions in phage genomes. Genotypic fingerprinting of various pathogen will be done to assess phage diversity.
