Laboratory supply

Need something from stores or help disposing of hazardous waste?

What we support

  • Stores

The Logistics Division operates a multi-discipline stores service commensurate with laboratory research and teaching requirements that are supported by Technical Services. Services include the provision of laboratory consumable items, solvents and chemicals; as well as short term capacity to store items with varying temperature requisites from 5°C to -18°C (special storage is available for items with temperature requisites ≥ -80°C).

The store also provides advice on bespoke purchase requirements; and advice regarding licences, end user statements and customer declarations for scheduled category substances.

Requests for stores services are to be sent to: scfp-stores@reading.ac.uk.

  • Gas cylinders

The transporting and connection of gas cylinders to labs is a Technical Services operation, observing a response time of <24hrs from initial requests. Gas cylinders are ordered by the logistics store staff via call-off orders and raised through the relevant finance department. These call-off orders are assigned to specific project codes and billed against invoices raised by BOC and Air Liquide.

Requests for gas cylinder replenishment are to be sent to: stores-gas-cylinders@reading.ac.uk.

  • Liquid nitrogen

Liquid Nitrogen is stored in various locations; stores and Lyle, Agriculture and Knight buildings. Store staff may order additional Liquid Nitrogen as required, however, any additional requirement is to be verified through Health & Safety Coordinators. Decanting is carried out by trained staff only.

Liquid Nitrogen withdrawals are billed against individual project codes.

  • Dry ice

Dry ice is delivered by BOC on Monday mornings and is stored in a container located outside the stores. Quantities held are regularly reviewed by the Store Supervisor and altered to meet the current requirement; usually between 250 - 300kg. Store staff require 48hrs notice regarding any excessive weekend requirement, to allow for delivery.

Dry ice withdrawals are billed against individual project codes.

  • Hazardous waste

The Logistics Division provides support associated with laboratory waste disposal and includes overseeing the provision of waste containment items, management and advice regarding the disposal of chemicals and advice regarding materials containing mercury and spent acids and alkalis.
