Senior Technician - Teaching & Research

Responsibilities

I am currently working as a part-time (three days) Senior Teaching and Research Technician, based in the Food and Nutritional Sciences Department in the School of Chemistry, Food and Nutritional Sciences and Pharmacy. My role involves supporting students in laboratory practical classes and in research laboratories. Responsibilities include providing technical support activities for undergraduate and postgraduates practical classes, which include setting up labs, equipment, preparation of bacterial cultures, media preparation as well demonstrating class practical. I also work as a part-time Research Technician for a BBSRC project for two days, where my responsibilities include providing technical support activities associated with preparing and analysing the samples.

I have recently been recognised as AFHEA fellow in higher education via FLAIR framework which is accredited by Advance Higher Education (HE). I have also completed my professional registration through the Science Council and am now a Registered Scientist (RSci) with the Institute of Science and Technology.

Career History

After graduation, I did post-graduation in Food technology and started my career as Quality Control In-charge in Food Industry. I was working in food industry for nearly 10 years and later decided to take a career break to raise my children. In 2007, resumed to work as Senior Technician in a secondary school and spent 8 years there. In 2015, joined the University of Reading as a Teaching and Research Technician on full time bases and since 2016, I am working part time as a Senior Research and Teaching Technician in Food microbiology department.
