I began working at Reading University on 1st February 2013 in the School Of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences (SPCLS) as a Workshop Technician. Around Mid-2015 my time was shared equally between SPCLS and Chemistry Workshops. The formation of the Technical Service function has meant I am now based in workshop by the Russell Building.
In my role I am responsible for the safe running of machines and equipment in the Workshop and Stores for the production of bespoke apparatus for Teaching and Research as well as making parts to repair existing equipment. I also provide training, support and oversight of our new apprentice who assists me in our Workshop duties.
In the workshop we have various machine tools including a CNC Vertical Machining Centre on which we machine complex parts for laboratory equipment using inventor CAM and Siemens Sinumerik software. I use Autodesk and InventorCAD software for designing and modelling parts for production within our facility enabling the design for high-precision parts. I also service equipment such as Vacuum pumps, Ball Mills, Various Lab Apparatus and Food Hall Equipment. I also Design and co-ordinate parts that have to be out-sourced when we don't have the facilities to make them ourselves and all my time and jobs are recorded on Pirana.
