Research Engagement and Impact Awards winners announced
Wednesday, 13 May 2020
Our Research Engagement and Impact Awards celebrate excellence in research that addresses real world problems and changes the world around us.
In 2020 we received 28 entries from across a wide spectrum of research disciplines and from researchers at different stages of their careers. The range of work shows the huge potential that we as a University have to bring about positive change locally, nationally and internationally.
Twelve outstanding projects were shortlisted in 2020 and from these four winners were chosen. The projects ranged from inspiring and empowering people to speak up on issues such as inequality or climate change, to designing tools to improve the delivery of health services.
All the projects demonstrate the importance of collaboration and partnership in research and engagement, and many involve individuals from different disciplines working together.
Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation said
"It has never been more important than now for us to find new ways to work with our neighbours for mutual benefit and we were delighted to see that more than a half of applications involved individuals and organisations local to Reading."
"We congratulate every one of the researchers who applied for the awards this year and hope these projects inspire you to find out more about our research and the ways we can work together to ensure research brings benefits to all."
The winners are:
Carol Fuller and Maria Danos (Education, Language and Learning) for building excellent community engagement through their ‘Marvellous Mums' programme.
Jacqui Turner (History) for her inspiring contributions to the centenary celebrations for Nancy Astor, the first female to take her seat in Parliament
Weizi Li and colleagues (Business Informatics, Systems and Accounting) for their outstanding partnership working with the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust to reduce missed out-patient appointments
Dr Grady Walker (Early Career Researcher, Global Development) for his innovative and collaborative project to empower farmers in Uganda to speak up on the impacts of climate change
