Race equality action plan launch
Tuesday, 13 November 2018
University Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, Ellie Highwood, would like to invite you to the launch of our action plan on race equality.
The launch will take place on Thursday 22 November (13:00-14:00) in GO2, Chancellor's Building.
Over the past 18 months, a team from across the University and RUSU has examined data on everything from staff recruitment and promotion to student attainment and diverse curricula. This is with a view to enabling students and staff from all ethnicities have the same opportunities to thrive.
There are a lot of good initiatives happening, but we can do more in areas like staff representation, student attainment and working together on understanding and celebrating our cultural diversity.
The work we need to do is grouped into the following themes:
- Understanding and celebrating race and ethnicity
- Report and Support processes
- Zero tolerance to racism
- Attracting and retaining diverse staff talent
- Supporting BAME staff progression and development
- Reducing ethnicity differentials in reward and recognition
- Reducing ethnicity attainment gapsCreating diverse and relevant curricula
- Building links with the local community
- Intersectionality of race and gender and race and religion
How can you help?
We are also looking for people to help oversee the delivery of the action plan. Specifically:
- Up to 4 people to join REACT (Race Equality at Reading) group – you would not be responsible for delivering the actions, but for overseeing progress and evaluating whether the action plan needs to be evolved. A description can be found here.
- A chair for the cultural diversity network, which is a staff network open to anyone with interest in race and ethnicity and how they affect the experience of staff and students at Reading. This is up to a 0.2FTE post (and can be split between 2 people). A more detailed description can be found here.
Deadline for expressions of interest for either opportunity is Friday 7 December to Ellie Highwood (e.j.highwood@Reading.ac.uk)
